Q3. [25 marks] Figure Q3 shows a gear system where the ring gear is fixed, and the hub and planet gears are bonded together with their centres overlapping. The connecting rod has a counterclockwise angular speed of 10 rad/s. The mass and moment of inertia of the combined hub and planet gears are mp = 130 kg and IHP = 130 kg/m². The moment of inertia of the sun gear is Is = 60 kg/m². The mass of the connecting rod is 5kg and it can be modelled as a slender bar. a) Draw the free body diagram for the system. Indicate your reference frame and the direction of rotation of all the gears. [3] b) Determine the angular speed of the planet gear. [4] c) Determine the angular speed of the sun gear. [4] d) Determine the magnitude of the velocity at point C. [2] e) If a 1kN.m counterclockwise torque is applied to the Sun gear, what is the resulting angular acceleration of the bonded hub and planet gears? [8] f) Determine the torque needed to be applied to the Sun gear to stop its motion in 60s.
