QUESTION 2 The term "new materials" is often associated with materials possessing significantly different properties compared to more traditional materials. Very often this is achieved by moving from "monolithic" to hybrid or composite materials. Although such materials may offer new possibilities, they also require new ways of thinking in term of manufacturing and joining. Choose a new and emerging engineering material that was not explicitly covered in the class or in the module. Perform evaluation on the chosen material and write a report to address the following questions: i. ii. iii. What are the characteristics or aspects of this material that make it potentially advantageous over more established materials? How the material is fabricated and the relative life-cycle cast of this material compared to the existing material it might replace. What are the chemical and mechanical properties of the material (stiffness, strength, ductility, mass density, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity) and the anticipated durability of the material? Include flow charts, diagrams and examples whenever necessary and cite the source of references in your report. Guide: Number of words: 1500 - 1750 [Total: 20 marks]
