Case Study: DothTech is a multinational company that providesimportant services of a social nature to her customers. From thetechnology perspective, the organization can be considered as alate adopter of innovations and characterized by relativeunderinvestment in IT, which has certain implications for both itsIT landscape and respective management practices. On the one hand,DothTech’s IT landscape is very heterogeneous and includes manylegacy information systems and technologies some of which have beenin use for decades. DothTech’s IT-related management practices arealso rather archaic. For instance, the relationships betweenbusiness and IT leaders in the organization exhibit evident signsof “us and them” mentality, while new investments in IT are viewedby business mostly to reduce costs of the existing operations.DothTech has a decentralized IT department headed by the CIO andresponsible for developing and supporting information systems forall its business units. The IT department employs around 240specialists and consists of three main functions: architecture,development, and service. The architecture function includes a fewarchitects focused predominantly on specific IT solutions. DothTechpreviously tried to uplift the maturity of its EA practice andextend the scope of architectural planning beyond separateinitiatives, but these attempts failed due to misalignment of itsbusiness and IT; therefore the respective architects had been maderedundant. In January 2022, the CIO decided to undertake anotherdeliberate effort to evolve DothTech’s EA practice with theinvolvement of external consultants at Gartner Consulting. For thispurpose, the organization engaged a rather well-known EAconsultancy (Gartner Consulting) to help initiate a full- fledgedEA practice. The consultancy at Gartner Consulting formed a projectteam consisting of four architects specialized in different subjectareas. This consulting team acted according to a detailedengagement plan agreed with DothTech’s senior IT leadership. Theplan stipulated in which sequence and when exactly various EAartifacts will be produced. In total, consultants worked for 3months, analyzed the organization, interviewed numerousstakeholders, and developed all the EA artifacts specified in theplan. Specifically, they started from analyzing DothTech in termsof current and desired maturity of its business capabilities andmapped existing applications to respective capabilities. Then, theycaptured all relevant data entities, documented all technologiesused in the organization, depicted current and defined targetapplication portfolios and created more detailed CRUD (create,read, update and delete) relationship matrices.
