(a) In the "Schrödinger's cat" thought experiment, a cat is trapped inside a box and linked to a quantum system with two outcomes (eigenstates). If outcome 1 occurs, the cat lives, if outcome 2 occurs, the cat dies. Describe this system in terms of superposition and the effects of observation, and why Schrödinger was not happy with it. [5 marks] (b) Discuss how being able to distinguish between particles, like in a classical system, affects the statistics of the system. Take three coins as an example. [5 marks] (c) How does an even or odd number of valence electrons per unit cell determine whether a solid is a conductor or an insulator? [5 marks] Type your answer in the box provided below. If you need to upload a picture (highlighted in red) or a file (highlighted in blue), you can do so using the following icons: ² v Else upload your file on dropbox or email to Prof. Ferrer, using your student number as a reference.
