Question Would a patient who has transplanted tissue from an identical twin need to take immunosuppressive drugs? Explain your response.
For a successful organ transplant, the MHCs of the donor and recipient must be closely matched. This is especially challenging due to the huge genetic diversity seen among MHCs. If the cellular uniforms are not similar enough for the transplanted tissue to blend in with the self-tissue, the immune system of the transplant recipient will attack the transplant, and the patient will experience graft rejection. Administering immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of the patient's life also limits the chances of transplant rejection.
