QUESTION 37 Lysine Iron Agar LIA is another example of a biochemical test from which we can gain several points of data from a single inoculation. This medium determines the ability of a bacterium to metabolize the amino acid lysine via deamination (removal of NH3 ) or decarboxylation (removal of CO₂). In addition, the medium can detect sulfur reduction (to H₂S) and glucose fermentation. Note that lysine decarboxylation can only occur if the medium is first acidified due to glucose fermentation. Fermentation is not, however, a prerequisite for lysine deamination. Sulfur reduction is independent of deamination, decarboxylation, and fermentation.
