A middle-aged man from East Africa, who had immigrated to the United States three years ago, had an intermittent fever for two weeks which progressed to a daily fever with chills. He had also experienced severe weight loss during the previous 6 months. He had traveled to Southeast Asia while living outside the United States, and his past medical history revealed that he had contracted malaria twice. A CT scan revealed that he had an enlarged spleen and liver. A needle biopsy of the spleen was sent to the laboratory for analysis. The stained preparation is shown below. 96 1.
