This case presents a 23-year-old primiparous female from Mali,
who delivered vaginally approximately 30 minutes ago. Following an
oxytocin induction of labor for postdates and a spontaneous vaginal
delivery, the patient has experienced a prolonged third stage, and
is now hemorrhaging moderately. The focus of this case is to
identify and assess a moderate postpartum hemorrhage and quickly
initiate proper intervention to stop the bleeding and stabilize the
deteriorating patient.
The students will be expected to recognize the signs and
symptoms of postpartum hemorrhage of moderate intensity, initiate
and document appropriate interventions, and call for help when
needed. The students should delegate to and communicate effectively
with the health care team members, communicate therapeutically with
the patient and support person, and apply patient-centered
care.
