statement. Barbara is a 37 year old woman who is pregnant and in her 20 week. She is married and has one child, a 4 year old girl named Lilly. At the advice of her obstetrician, Barbara has received genenic counselling and undergone amniocentesis, so that tests can be performed for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects. When the tests come in, Barbara is told that the fetus has been diagnosed with a chromosomal abnormality known as Turner's syndrome, A normal female has two X chromosomes. In Turner's syndrome, one of the two X chromosomes is missing; there is a total of 45 chromosomes (not the usual 46). Females who have Turner's syndrome have a characteristic appearance of a short stature, webbing of the neck, sagging eyelids, low hairline on the back of the neck, and multiple moles. The syndrome is also characterized by narrowing of the aorta, the failure of menstruation and breast development, and infertility later in life. Although many patients with Turner's syndrome have difficulty performing tasks that require spatial orientation, they cannot otherwise function normally in society. With the Turner's syndrome diagnosis in mind Barbara's doctor advises her to undergo an abortion for the 20 week fetus. 1. After hearing the news about her unborn fetus having Turner's Syndrome would it be morally acceptable for Barbara to seek an abortion at 22 weeks into the pregnancy? (Yes/No - Please explain your position) 2. As a result of complications with this pregnancy Barbara has developed gestational diabetes and preeclampsia (dangerously high blood), and her obstetrician believes that these two conditions will worsen if she carries the pregnancy any further. Since Barbra is 37 years she has already had irreversible damage done to her kidneys. Because of these circumstances would Barbara be morally justified to get an abortion for this pregnancy?
