The assigning of marks via grading is a relatively new
concept (around 1900), and one which acts as an external motivator
that in many ways works against the internal motivation for
learning. An “ungrading” approach recognizes that learning is a
process and forces the student themselves to reflect on where
they’re at in that process. By asking the learner to justify how
much learning has occurred, students can reflect upon where they
are in the learning process. In this course, you’ve been asked to
complete A LOT of work on a variety of topics. There is no need to
demonstrate the acquisition of rote knowledge in this course
because that’s not how the material in this course will ever be
used in the real world. What we do need to do is determine how
effectively you can make connections between the material presented
in class and a future scenario that may have similarities. In this
exam, you will be asked to reflect on your confidence level of
assessing the 3 scenarios described below and to grade yourself
using typical A-F scoring. As the professor, I reserve the right to
adjust your self-assigned grade if I feel it doesn’t appropriately
reflect your level of knowledge and/or effort.
Your patient is a 75 year old male who has recently been
widowed. His family is concerned with his level of independence to
stay in his home without his spouse.
Patient is a healthy, active male age 34 who reports
onset of lowback pain beginning on a Sunday, two weeks ago. The
pain is described as a stabbing pain, and includes shooting
sensations down the left buttock and leg. The pain is present at
all times of day, regardless of whether the patient is standing,
sitting or laying down. The patient is otherwise in good health but
wants to return to his job as a grocery shelf stocker.
Patient is a varsity lacrosse player who was elbowed in
the temple during a scrimmage one week ago, exhibited symptoms
consistent with concussion within the next 24 hours and was advised
by a walk-in GP to avoid exercise and sit in a dark room for 10
days.
For each patient, write a paragraph in which you
describe your confidence level in knowing how to assess the
described patient in order to allow decisions to be made about
their current state of health
