Written Homework 1 Math& 146 1 Descriptive Statistics For this section, use the data set provided in the file hw1ln.csv 1.1 Summaries from a Spreadsheet Using a spreadsheet’s statistics tools provide the usual descriptive summaries: • Sample mean • Sample variance and standard deviation • Median • Quartiles • A histogram describing the data • Optional: a boxplot describing the data Notes 1. In case your computer generated histogram should not render in my spreadsheet or in Canvas, it would be good if you added a screenshot of your graph 2. If you are drawing a boxplot by hand, make sure you are using graph paper and a ruler for a clean picture. 1 2 Regression 2 Histograms If you have had trouble convincing your spreadsheet to draw a proper histogram, here are some suggestions. It is surprising how indirect the drawing of histograms in some spreadsheets turns out to be, so here are links to some on line help. For a tutorial on how to draw a histogram in LibreOffice (very hard to do otherwise) you can look at (this will essentially work for Excel as well). For a tutorial on one way to draw histograms in Gnumeric (similar to the LibreOffice and Excel way) you can look at Gnumeric has a menu entry for producing histograms, with some options to choose from. A Gnumeric help file, which also suggests an alternate way (to use the “calculated bins” option, you might want to check that your data column should be marked as “Labels”), can be found at https:// help.gnome.org/users/gnumeric /stable/descriptive_statistics.html.en There are too many on line tutorials about drawing histograms in Excel, so I will skip sponsoring one over all the others – you can choose the one you find most helpful. If you installed the Analysis Toolpak add-on (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... -in-excel- 6a63e598-cd6d42e3-9317-6b40ba1a66b4 for instructions on loading, and https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... b5a2cefab6 for usage) you have an easier way to answer all these questions. 1.2 ”Naive” Quartiles Make sure you sort the list (your spreadsheet will be happy to do that, from the menu under “Data”), after which you can choose your own values of • The Median • The Quartiles Make sure you checked the discussion about quartiles in the lecture notes. 2 Regression For the data sets in the file hw1rg.csv , find the equation for the regression line (something of a form like Y = aX + b), the correlation coefficient r, and the corresponding R2 . Include scatterplots of the data (if possible, with the regression line included), and of the residuals. Conclude with a comment on whether the corresponding linear model looks like a reasonable tool to analyze the data
