Case 3: A 32-year-old female is admitted to the hospital forroutine knee surgery. After 2 days of care, she is discharged forphysical therapy. A week later, she returns to the emergency roomof the hospital with complaints of extreme weakness, mild jaundice,and some back pain. An automated CBC reveals a hemoglobin of 6.9g/dL and hematocrit of 21.3%. The ER physician orders 3 units fortransfusion STAT. A sample is drawn and sent to the blood bank.
