Your TA asks you to make 100 mL of a benzoic acid/benzoatebuffer solution of pH = 3.74. The Ka of benzoic acid is 6.5 Å~10–5.
a) Determine the volumes of 0.50 M benzoic acid and 0.50 Msodium benzoate required to make 100.0 mL of a pH 3.74 buffersolution.
b) Determine the volumes of 0.50 M benzoic acid and 0.50 Msodium hydroxide required to make 100.0 mL of a pH 3.74 buffersolution.
(Hint: these problems will require the Henderson-HasselbalchEquation and algebra. In each part, there are 2 unknowns: thevolume of the acid and the volume of the base. In order to solvefor 2 unknowns, you will need 2 equations.)
