Benzocaine is a topical numbing agent that can be used to treat minor burns and skin abrasions. It can be easily synthesized via the Fischer esterification reaction. This reaction is run in the presence of a catalytic amount of H₂SO4 (~0.1 equiv), as well as molecular sieves (to consume the water by- product). In the reaction below, 1.1 molar equivalents of H₂SO4 are used. Why is the other 1.0 molar equivalent of H₂SO4 needed in this reaction? What would happen if only a catalytic amount of H₂SO4 was added? As part of your answer use structures to illustrate your point.
