LABORATORY EXERCISE 5 MEASURE OUTPUT OF THE WIND ENERGY CONVERTER IN RELATION TO THE POSITION OF THE WINGS A wind energy unit should always work with the best possible efficiency factor, i.e. The maximum possible power should be taken from the wind and converted to electrical energy. The power depends on different factors. The wind energy unit does not have any influence on the factors of wind speed and load from the load element. Modern wind energy units, however, are able to vary the position of their wings order to optimise their output power. The interpedence between output power and position of the wings shall be examined in this experiment. Objective: To determined the relationship between output power and position of the wings Measuring the Output Power of a Wind Energy Converter in Relation to the Position of the Wings Setup Blower Voltmeter Load 2 Amperemeter Figure 5 Procedure: 1. Set up the experiment according to figure 5. 2. Ensure the range selector switch of the voltmeter is set to position "DCV 20V", the amperemeter to position "DCA 200 mA". For the load, the resistance in load 2 should be set to 50 2. Use 3 straight form wings. 3. Set wind speed to 7m/s. Measure current and voltage with different tilt angles from 0-90° in steps of 150 using straight form wings. 4. Repeat experiment at wind speed of 10m/s 5. Plot power vs tilt angle for both wind speeds on the same graph. 1
Observation and Discussion: Provide explanations Tilt angle 0⁰ 150 300 45⁰ 60⁰ 75⁰ 90⁰ U/V 7m/s 1/mA P/mV Wind Speed U/V 10m/s 1. What is the optimum tilt angle for each wind speed? 1/mA 0.475 8.66 4.11 0.266 4.94 1.31 0.403 7.41 2.99 0.658 12.09 7.95 0.749 13.74 10.29 1,025 18.64 18.87 0.921 16.79 15.46 1.450 26.40 38.28 1-266 23.3 29.50 1.993 36.40 72.54 0 P/mV 2. What relationship between tilt angle and wind speed you suspect? Why?
3. Can a wind power unit with a fixed rotor blade position work optimally? Why? 4. Conclude what technical demands are made today towards modern wind energy units?
