Environmental racism refers to how neighborhoods populated primarily by people of color and low-socioeconomic status households are disproportionately exposed to envi- ronmental hazards. A recent NPR report highlighted how lead poisoning continues to affect children in the Midwest today, particularly Black children and children living in low-income neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are more likely to have older houses that contain lead- based paint or be located near a historic source of contamination such as a lead smelter. Researchers are continuing to investigate high levels of lead in children in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Suppose we have lead blood level data from a random sample of 80 children living in low- 2 income neighborhoods in St. Louis, Missouri; the simulated data are in lead.Rdata. We are interested in using this sample to construct a confidence interval for the population 75th percentile lead level. While formulas for such a confidence interval are not covered in this course, a simulation- based approach can be used to construct this interval. i. Write a simulation that carries out the following steps for 10,000 iterations. Clearly comment your solution code. Sample 80 values from lead with replacement. Compute the 75th percentile of the sampled values. - Store the value of the 75th percentile. ii. Determine the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles of the 10,000 stored values. These values are the lower and upper bounds of an approximate 95% confidence interval for the population 75th percentile lead level.
