Company ABC provides delivery service of large parcels across the four states in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. At each collection center, the parcels that have arrived are consolidated and loaded onto several lorries for delivery throughout the area. The parcels are normally divided among the lorries based on their geographical destinations to minimize the average time needed to make the deliveries. Consider a particular problem faced by a dispatch manager of Company ABC as follows. The manager, Ali, needs to determine a delivery plan for 15 parcels. These parcels will be delivered to 15 distinct addresses which all at locations many kilometers apart. Ali has already identified a considerable number of attractive possible routes for the individual delivery lorries. These routes are presented in the following table, where the numbers in each column indicate the order/sequence of the deliveries, along with the estimated time required to traverse the route. Delivery Location Location 1 Location 2 Location 3 Location 4 Location 5 Location 6 Location 7 Location 8 Location 9 Location 10 Location 11 Location 12 Location 13 Location 14 Location 15 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 1 2 2 2 3 1 2 4 3 1 2 1 2 3 1 Time (in hours) 6 8 6 6 7 5 1 2 2 4 3 Attractive Possible Route 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 1 1 2 1 7 8 9 1 2 3 9 3 2 8 2 1 9 3 1 2 2 1 3 6 5 1 2 16 17 2 1 3 1 2 3 18 19 20 1 2 2 1 1 2 7 5 5 8 7 5 Ali has six lorry drivers in his team. You intend to develop a spreadsheet model to help Ali to select six routes for his six lorry drivers that minimize their total time while including each delivery location on exactly one route.
