Consider the spectra shown in Panel 1 (Figure 1 at the end ofthe lab), which shows the lines of hydrogen for a hypotheticalstar. The top panel shows the spectra if the star is not moving.The bottom two panels show the spectra if the star is moving at twodifferent speeds. The rest wavelengths for the hydrogen lines (innm) are given in the table below.
1. Is the star moving towards us or away from us? Explain howyou know.
2. Estimate the observed value of the lines for each of thepanels and record in the table below.
3. Calculate the velocity based on each line, and then reportthe average velocity.
Repeat for Panel 2 (Figure 2 at the end of the lab):
