Problem 3 A vertical cylindrical container is filled with n moles of an ideal monatomic gas. The container is closed by an airtight piston which can slide without friction. On top of the piston are three blocks of equal mass. The bottom part of the cylinder is in contact with a thermostat at temperature T. The walls of the cylinder are thermally isolated, and the effect of atmospheric pressure can be neglected. The system is initially in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium A. Then, one of the blocks is suddenly removed using a negligible amount of work. The system then relaxes to a new state of thermodynamic equilibrium B. Finally, the thermostat at temperature T is substituted with a thermostat at temperature 2T, and the system relaxes to a new state of thermodynamic equilbrium C. Compute, in terms of the known values of n and T and of the universal gas constant R: a) The heat exchanged and the work performed by the system in the A→B process. b) The change in entropy of the gas, environment and universe in the A→B process. c) The minimum work required to bring back the system to state A from state B. d) The heat exchanged and the work performed by the system in the B-C process. e) The change in entropy of the gas, environment and universe in the B-C process.
