X X-A- X X Molecule #1 X₁₁ X X X Molecule #2 The lone pair in molecule #2 is less crowded in an equatorial position because there are only two bonding groups sitting at 90 degree angles. Both Molecule #1 and Molecule #2 are correct The lone pair in molecule #2 is more crowded when placed off to the side in an equatorial position. Molecule #1 is incorrect because the lone pair sits 90 degrees from three bonding electron groups, therefore it is very crowded. Molecule #1 is a valid molecular geometry because the lone pair is less crowded when placed in an axial position.
