Add 5 mL of 9 M sulfuric acid and mix by gently swirling. Attach the flask to a fractional distillation setup (see Figure 1), using an ice-water bath to cool the receiving flask (25 mL RBF). Elimination Begin heating the mixture and collecting the distillate. The temperature at the top (or head) of the distillation should be monitored and kept below 90°C. Stop heating when ~5 mL of liquid remains in the reaction flask and transfer the distillate to a clean Erlenmeyer flask. Dry the distillate with addition of a drying agent (anhydrous potassium carbonate). Isolation Decant the dried organic mixture into a dry 25 mL RBF, add a stirbar and prepare a simple distillation setup (see Figure 1). For the receiving flask, use a clean 25 mL RBF and record the weight of the flask. This will allow you to measure the weight of the product for calculation of percent recovery. Again, use an ice-water bath to cool the receiving flask. Distill the product, collecting the product that boils between 80-85°C.
