Ms. Darden is a 27-year-old woman who presents to thegynecologist’s office for her yearly check-upcomplaining of bilateral breast pain and tenderness. Her lastmenstrual period was 18 days ago. Shedescribes her pain as dull and reports that her breasts feel heavyand tender. When asked about healthpromotion activities, Ms. Darden stated that she performs monthlybreast exams. Physical examination findingsreveal the following: Breasts moderate size, evenly pigmented,bilaterally symmetric, and hang equallywith smooth contour. Venous patterns bilaterally similar. Breastsfirm, smooth, elastic withouttenderness, lumps, or nodules. Areolae round, nipples protruding,symmetric, soft, pliable, smooth, andintact without discharge. Axillary lymph nodes are notpalpated.
