1)Electrical activity of an approximatelyspherical neuron in culture was recorded with intracellularelectrodes. The experiments were carried out at 37o C. The normalsaline bathing the cell contained 145 mM Na+ and 5.6 mM K+. In thisnormal saline the resting potential was measured to be -46 mV, butif the Na+ was replaced with an impermeant ion (i.e. the cell wasbathed in a Na-free solution) the resting potential increased to-60 mV. You may assume that in normal saline the ENa was +35 mV,that the membrane is impermeable to Cl-, that Ca++ is not directlyinvolved, and to simplify the issue you can ignore Na efflux in theNafree saline condition (i.e. assume the cell is not permeable toNa in that Condition) condition).
A). Starting from the initial normal saline condition,if you added KCl to the extracellular solution so the external K+concentration became 56 mM, what would the cell’s resting potentialbecome?
