Problem 2 Multi-electron Atoms II 6 (2+2+2) points According to the Pauli exclusion principle, each quantum state for electrons can only be occupied by one electron. In multielectron atoms electron states are also specified by four quantum numbers, here (n,1,m,ms). In the ground state all the most strongly bound states are populated. Inside an electron shell the states with lower I are occupied first, because those are bound more strongly in multielectron atoms. (a) How many electrons in helium, neon (Z = 10), phosphorus (Z = 15), and copper (Z = 29) are in each the K-, L-, M-, and N-shell? (b) How many electrons in the elements given in item (a) have an orbital angular momentum 1 = 0 and how many have l = 2? (c) What are the quantum numbers of the two electrons in the ground state of helium?
