The loss of Nalanda University to Muslim raiders was a major blow to Indian Buddhism Muslim raiders targeted many Buddhist temples and shrines destroying much of the Buddhist religious infrastructure. The Mongols seizure of many important Indian Buddhist works contributed to Buddhism's decline. Priests and monks focused more inward in their thoughts losing touch with the mainstream of Indian society.
