Read the followingscenarios about teachers teaching in a low socioeconomic urbancommunity, and identify potential sources of cultural discontinuitybetween teachers/schools and the students. Note that some may seemobvious, while others are more subtle.
1. The seventh grade math teacher is teaching his students aboutthe concept of perimeter and for homework tells them to “go homeand determine the perimeter of your backyards. Then useyour computer to create a virtual representation of your house andthe fence that would be needed to enclose the backyard, indicatingthe exact length of the fence. Print the representation on a pieceof poster-board and bring to class.”
2. The eighth grade social studies teacher is teaching herstudents about Thomas Jefferson and for homework tells them to“Write a five page report explain why Thomas Jefferson was such agreat American.”
3. A fifth grade language arts teacher gave her students a quizwhich had them write ten compete and grammatically correctsentences. She then returns a paper with the word “WRONG” next tothe following three sentences. There is no follow up or discussionabout why the sentences are incorrect:
- The boy didn’t have no money so he didn’t get nocandy at the movie.
- The three stories was funny and interesting.
- When the old man talk everybody listens.
4. A fifth grade teacher says, “In order to do well on Monday’svocabulary test you should get your parents to quiz you over theweekend.”
5. A fourth grade social studies teacher says, “Today we aregoing to talk about immigration. We are going to read about shortstory about a little girl who moved from Russia to America in the1920s.”
6. A fourth grade language arts teacher gives a vocabularypre-test consisting of the following words:
Seldom, Complex, Appropriate, Intolerant, Applicable,Distinguishable, Preference, Lucrative, Genuine, Sincere
She then says, “We have not yet studied these words, but youshould be familiar with many of them. Let’s see how smart you guysare?”
