You have a choice of two types of chillers for this building: one has an efficiency of 1.2kW/ton and an installed cost is $857/ton. The other chiller has an efficiency of 0.86 kW/ton and an installed cost of $1025/ton. These are packaged air-cooled chillers with scroll compressors. Google this to see an image of these. The condenser is air cooled so there is no cooling tower. Assume each chiller operates an equivalent of 5200hrs/yr at full load capacity and efficiency. Assuming the chilled water pump electrical use for these two chillers are negligible, compare the present worth life cycle cost of operating these two chillers and show which has the lowest life cycle cost. Is the difference 10% or more? In other words, is there a significant difference? Electrical cost: consumption $0.05/kWh. Demand $6.00/kW-month Assume electrical costs escalate 3.5% and the cost of money is 8.5%. Maintenance costs are 2% of the installed cost per year and do not escalate. Assume a 20-year service life for both chillers.
