A 45-year-old woman has a thyroidectomy because of asymmetric enlargement of the thyroid gland, first noticed during a physical examination 6 weeks ago. She underwent an adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma 3 years ago. Microscopically, the bilateral thyroid lesions are composed of spindle cells arranged in small clusters. Deposits of amyloid are present between neoplastic cells. Foci of C-cell hyperplasia are also present. The lesions are confirmed as malignant.
