Part 2 – Agglutination Reaction Virtual Lab
Read pages 101 – 102 in your Photographic Atlas and page 161about Streptococcus pyogenes. Agglutinationreactions are any reaction where antigen to antibody binding causesclumping (a positive result). They are commonly used forblood typing. (Make sure you understand how blood typingworks).
The majority of sore throats are viral in origin, but latexagglutination tests can be used to determine if Streptococcuspyogenes is the cause of a patient’s sore throat (strepthroat), and can also identify the specific group (or serotype orserovar) of S. pyogenes.

And then perform this virtual lab to test 2 patients forstrep throat (need to click on “run Adobe Flash” and“Allow”). Make sure to read and follow the “Directions” and“Steps.” You’ll be testing 2 controls and 2 patient sampleson a total of 2 cards (two tests per card):
