While interest groups are often controversial, they are oftenbenefical for the politics of democracy. There are two main thingsinterest groups must achieve to truly benefit the government:shaping policies and providing information. Interest groups attemptto shape policies by mobilizing voters or by directly puttingpressure on those officials already in power. If interest groupscan inspire a larger voter turnout, they can convince these votersto put their candidate's name on the ballot. These groups putdirect pressure on their elected officials in order to presuadethem to look at major or current issues within the nation or theworld. Interest groups often write laws for their officials to passor rewrite, because these politicians are often busy with otherfactors of government. When political figures fail to keep thepromises they made while running, citizens regret electing them,leading interest groups to remind these officials of why they arein office and what they should be doing to make a change. Interestgroups also gather information for these elected officials, whichthey would otherwise have a difficult time recieving. Interestgroups can involve minorities or simply unheard citizens, and thestrength in numbers allows their voice to be heard among the group.Politicians rely on interest groups to provide them withinformation about the public opinion, which allows these governmentofficials to remediate or at least attempt to solve problems amongthe people. Pluralism is the idea that a democracy consists ofvarious interest groups that balance each other out in order toachieve the common good. However, many argue that the amount ofconflicting views in society will never allow a common good to bereached. These people argue that interset groups are actuallycausing more problems than they are solving, because they oftenfocus on minority benefits rather than the "greater good" ormajority. Although a lack of minority representation in politics isquite often the overall issue. When people argue that these groupsshould be focusing more on the majority, they themselves providemore issues for interest groups to solve. Minority representationis absent from politics in almost every other way, allowinginterest groups to be created to attempt to provide thatrepresentation for themselves. Other opposing citizens who disagreewith the formation of interest groups believe that their very rightto form is unconstitutional. However, the freedom of speech in thevery First Amendment allow these groups to form, protest, andprovide for their government. This amendment also protects therights which the groups have once formed, like giving money andinformation to specific government officials. The knowledge of theprotection under this amendment inspires more citizens to join orcreate interest groups. The size of an interest group is perhapsthe most important factor once this group is formed, because itmakes the government look at the group more seriously, since theyknow a large portion of the citizens they have vowed to protect andprovide for are involved in these groups.
