The current political design in the United States has two mainpolitical parties. These are the Democrat and the Republicanparties. There are several examples of third parties that haveformed over the years. These include the Libertarian party, theGreen party, the Constitution party and many other smaller parties. However, no third party candidate has won a national election sincethe Republican party was formed in the mid 1800's. Modern electionstend to be centered around candidates from the Democrat and theRepublican parties. Third party candidates gain more attention whenthe major party candidates are unpopular. However, "most votersunderstand that minor parties have no real chance of winning even asingle office" (Openstax 9.2). Because of this, most people willvote for either the Republican or the Democrat candidate even ifthey dislike the candidate or do not agree with their policies.Voters know that third party candidates do not have a real chanceof winning any national office, so they often will vote for a majorparty candidate even if they support the third party candidate, andrecent political events have created an even greater divide betweenright leaning Republicans and left leaning Democrats. This hascaused Republicans to become even more conservative and Democratsto become even more liberal. This is evident in the recent eventswith second amendment rights and the controversy over the supremecourt decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In some cases, this has ledto political extremism like what we saw at the Capitolinsurrection. Because of the extreme differences in politicalideology right now in the United States, a centrist third partyideologically in between the Democrat and the Republican parties isneeded but not realistic or feasible. In elections, "voters canselect a candidate who more closely represents their ownpreferences on the important issues of the day" (Openstax, 9.2).Because American's are so divided, it is unlikely a third partyideologically central candidate would attract a large voterturnout. Right now, the parties seem less and less likely to worktogether. Instead, they find ways to constantly attack each otherand try to gain favor among supporters. A more central third partywould be a welcomed change but would not stand a chance of beingsuccessful in the current political climate of divisiveness anddistain that exists between Democrats and Republicans.
