he most effective group I have ever been in I would have to sayis when I worked on a remodel team for Wal-Mart in Gladstone, MO.We expanded from a regular Wal-Mart to a Supercenter. Theremodel job was over the course of 6 months before we moved to ourpermanent positions within the store. It wasn’t much money;however, we were all showing what we were made of to get afull-time position. We were only hired as temporary staff, with anopportunity of full-time hire on. What made the group so effectiveis we worked as a team. We followed specific instructions/blueprints on how to build and remodel the entire store. Having acollectiveness of different backgrounds of knowledge, expertise,and physical capability we all put our best foot forward. Alsohaving a couple goals to work on is very motivational. The managersdirected us but also allowed us to come up with solutions foraccurate, quality work. We would always have a pump up meetingevery shift to get energized, answer any questions, celebrateawesome coworkers, and how to organize a strategic plan.
Think of a person whom you think is a particularly good teammember? What made them a good team member?
There are several factors that make up a good team member. Ateam member I used to work with had a lot of good qualities. Shehardly ever called in, unless in an emergency. She also hadflexibility, expertise and always seeking knowledge of herposition, she would set goals to achieve. Additionally, she wascooperative, committed, responsible, caring, sociable, andpositive.
Think of someone whom you think is a problematic team member?What made them a problem?
A current coworker of mine not only gets upset and stressedeasily. She has also worked for the company for 5 years and doesn’tfully understand her position still. It can be quite a problem. Wework in the nursing department for Assisted Living. We have so muchwe do in our roles. It can be quite overwhelming, especiallyworking with dementia residents. For example, last night she wasvery unorganized because she didn’t follow the dinner plan. Westart at one table and move to the next, we don’t skip aroundbecause the residents will be upset if the rest of the people attheir table are eating but them. Or get confused and leave thetable. Getting upset with my other 2 team members and yelling atthem and throwing the list with the menu and what the residentspicked on the ground and leaving during the serving. I had todiffuse the situation. Also, she is very unorganized and doesn’tknow how to correctly do all the paperwork. Lastly, she willdisappear for a long time and not help as much as she should. Ithas become frustrating every shift and that’s one of the manyreasons I told my boss we need a meeting so we can lower thestress.
