#Welness lab -- Dietary Approaches Analysis
INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this lab is to develop healthy
literacy regarding nutrition lifestyles. To adhere to a "diet" is
to pursue a dietary lifestyle based on a specific dietary
prescription or set of overarching principles aimed at achieving
certain nutrition-related, health outcomes. There is a great
diversity in diets all with their own potential target outcomes and
evidence supporting their efficacy.
In this lab you will compare one of the diets
endorsed in the 2015 - 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to
another diet of your choice (see instructions below for specifics)
by reviewing
at least two resources (one or more resources
providing descriptive information about the diet(s) and a published
research study manuscript).
A successful comparison will detail the specific
tactics or standards of each diet and its primary health-related
target. Then you will briefly summarize the results of one
scientific manuscript regarding the diet's efficacy. You will
conclude the lab with your own key takeaways regarding your own
dietary lifestyle. Read and complete the instructions below to
complete the lab.
INSTRUCTIONS
(a) A named/commercialized diet (e.g.
Ornish, Atkins, South Beach, etc.)
OR
(b) A different dietary lifestyle
strategy (e.g. ketogenic, Vegan, Paleo, etc,)
2. Complete the reflection
questions.
TABLE 1. Comparison of Dietary Approaches
Guidelines for
What to eat?
Guidelines for
How much to eat?
Guidelines for
When to eat [frequency, timing,
etc.]?
Where did you find this
information?
Cite at least one electronic resource [website, podcast,
etc.]
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
(a)
find and briefly summarize, in your own words the
result of a research study regarding the efficacy of the diet
you chose on a health-related outcome. A good starting
point to find

research manuscripts is to do a search on
Google Scholar and Pub Med and look for full- text
availability.
(b) provide the electronic link for the research manuscript, or
attach a PDF of it.
2. Whether related to these
diets or not, detail a SMART goal for your own dietary lifestyle.

Answer each of the questions below
within each SMART goal component.
(a) Specific: What is one specific goal you
have for your own dietary lifestyle and which of the three areas
from the chart above does it fit in (what, how much, or
when)?
(b) Measurable: What is
your target health outcome? How will you measure it and how often
will you measure it?
(c) Achievable: What
resources do you have or will you need to accomplish this
goal?
(d) Realistic/Relevant: Why is
this goal personally meaningful?
(e) Timely: What is your
approximate or specific timeline for achieving this goal?
GRADING RUBRIC
Summarizes each aspect required in TABLE 1 with accurate
detail from external reference(s).

point/box that provides inadequate summary]
Provides electronic link to each electronic resource
referenced in TABLE 1 summary.
[-5 points for missing or irrelevant
reference]
Reflection Q1a. Student articulates in own words a brief
and specific summary of research study results
[-3 if missing results or not
articulated in own words]
Reflection Q1b. Provides electronic link or .pdf attachment
of research manuscript
[-5 points for missing or irrelevant
reference]
Reflection Q2. Provides a relevant response for each
component of the SMART goal.
