Assignment:
According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the
International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights,
and Pope John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris, health care is a
human right (A human right is inherent. A person possesses it
simply by virtue of being human—even if circumstances prevent one
from exercising it.). Do you agree or disagree? The state of the
healthcare system in the United States has been a topic of
political discussion for at least a century. Even though the
Affordable Care Act (AKA Obama Care) has been in place for 12 years
and has become extremely popular with the public (Despite continued
political opposition), the debate is far from ended. What are your
thoughts on the matter? Should everyone be guaranteed access to
adequate healthcare? Should the present system in which most
people’s access to healthcare is dependent on their ability to pay
(with assistance through Medicaid and subsidized insurance for
those who need it) continue? Should the U.S. adopt a system similar
to Canada’s (and the U.S. military’s) where the government pays for
all health care? Or should there be some sort of mix? You don’t
need to go into technical detail, just say, in general terms, what
the healthcare system should be like in this country and why you
think that way. Discuss your reasoning process in coming to your
point of view. If possible, relate your decision-making process to
the principles and theological and philosophical points of view
discussed in Bioethics in a Cultural Context. If you have
experience with healthcare in another country, you are welcome to
bring that into your discussion.
