Case study
Greg and some of his friends were smoking marijuana in Greg's
residence hall room. They used fans to blow the smoke out the
window, air freshener candles to mask the smell, and a towel at the
bottom of the door to prevent the smoke from escaping. However, the
residence hall assistant smelled the scent and immediately called
security. Greg and his friends were arrested and eventually kicked
out of the residence hall, and had to find new housing in the
middle of the semester. Greg felt this measure was extremely unfair
because he didn't think this situation was that serious. Besides,
he pointed out that underage students caught drinking alcohol in
their rooms were rarely written up.
Marijuana use is on the rise, and the use of alcohol among students
is still very common. Why might many people not take substance
abuse very seriously? What are some of the problems that result,
and what are the implications for young people? A number of trends
toward substance abuse have been noted in relation to college life.

your school's student body?
