QUESTION 1 As part of the preliminary design of simple gear train for conveyor system, a check is to be undertaken to determine/check that the critical speed whether is higher than the design speed of 3000 RPM. The shaft material is iron steel with a Young's modulus of 210 x 10° N/m² and diameter is 40mm. The shaft is subjected by four point masses pulleys W₁, W2, W3 and W₁ as shown in Figure 1. Assume that the bearings are rigid and act as simple supports by two bearings at R₁ and R₂. Ignore the self-weight of the shaft. a) Draw a free body diagram and determine the value of R₁ and R₂ and their direction. b) Draw the force and moment diagram then obtain the location of maximum bending moment. c) Using Macaulay's method for the deflection of beams, determine the defelction (y) at four points of pulleys W₁, W₂, W3 and W. d) Determine the critical speed of the shaft, oo, (RPM). Explain either the critical speed is safe compare to design speed. Justify your answer. e) To increase the value of critical speed of shaft, propose one action that can be taken. L₁=0.15 m O XX R₁ L₂=0.15 m 130 N W L₂ = 0.15 m L 0.15 m L=0.15 m 140 N W₂ Figure I 250N W 100N W₁ XX R₂
