A researcher was interested in comparing two well-known techniques for alleviating anxiety-humor and deep breathing. He split his class up into two groups and randomly assigned subjects into two groups. Group 1 listened to 3 minutes of a comedy routine (humor condition) and group 2 practiced deep breathing for 3 minutes (the breathing condition); then they took a self-report survey of their anxiety symptoms.
