Question: Is Mary Practicing Professional Distancing? Why or Why Not? Explain your thoughts
Mary, a Respiratory Therapist, has been working with Johnny since infancy. Johnny was born with Cystic Fibrosis, and until his 8th birthday was doing quite well. Suddenly at age eight, Johnny's lung health took a turn for the worst and his health declined. His pulmonologist fear that Johnny will not survive long. Mary now has her own 8 year old son and finds it very difficult to watch her patient decline. She has been thinking a lot about him lately and feels that her connection with Johnny is making it difficult to parent her own child, as she is constantly fearful about his health, despite that fact that he is a healthy 8 year old. Mary goes to her Clinical manager and requests that she switch patients- turning Johnny's care over to another therapist. She asked that the family be notified of the change as she does not want to have to address the issue with them. Her supervisor takes care of the transfer and informs Mary about how devastated the family is and how upset Johnny is that she will no longer be caring for him as they have developed a close bond over the years, and Johnny has come to trust Mary, and feels comfortable with her. This transition is particularly difficult for his parents given the decline in Johnny's health. When Mary sees the family in the hallway of the hospital she quickly turns around, avoiding any contact with them.
