Effect of Puffer Fish Poison In Japan, the Puffer Fish is famous for its taste and poison. The Japanese emperor used to officially ban puffer fish eating because it was too easy for people to be poisoned and killed. Over the years, chefs learned how to best prepare puffer fish to avoid poisoning, and scientists researched why the puffer poison is lethal. Puffer poison is a compound (Tetrodotoxin) that inhibits the voltage-gated Na channel in the neuronal membrane. When the human body takes in this poisonous compound, sodium ions can no longer flow from the outside to the inside of the neuron via their voltage- dependent Na* channels. No Na* influx means no action potential. As action potentials are the basis for all essential brain functions, the poison compound from puffer fish can quickly kill a careless eater. Now imagine you have the poison compound in your lab, and you add it to a neuron in the petri dish.
