Your facility plans to dispose ofseveral tons of lead (Pb) bricks, many of which are contaminatedwith Cs-137. You have contracted with a hazardous waste processingfacility that can accept Pb, but it requires that the maximumsurface contamination not exceed 1000 dpm/100cm2.Decontaminating the bricks is not an option. Each 2” x 4” x 8”brick will be directly counted with a 4” x 8” GM pancake styleprobe attached to a portable scaler/rate-meter. The backgroundwhere the bricks are located is 400 cpm. Specify a counting timeand a count rate that your field technicians can use to make a “Goor No Go” determination for each brick. Use equation 3 andapplicable correction factors that you determined in experiments 2,3, and 4 to calculate a Cs-137 beta count rate that corresponds tothe 1000 dpm/100cm2 activity limit. State anyassumptions that you make; e.g. probe efficiency, different valuesfor “f” correction factors, etc. Use your best judgment but providea defensible justification.
