Jason is a 17 year-old wrestler. He is constantly worried about "making weight" for competitions, and will fast for several days prior to competitions and then weigh in and then will eat excessively large amounts after the competition, to the point of feeling of out of control. He either uses laxative or excessively exercises afterwards because he feels guilty and becomes afraid of gaining weight before the next competition and then will often begin fasting again. This has been happening for the past year and he is feeling more and more out of control and more fear of gaining weight, even when he is not competing. He is slightly underweight.
What questions do would you want to ask? What disorder would you suspect first? What else would you need to rule out?
What to do
1. Read the case study and identify the symptoms presented
2. Select 3 Disorders that at least partially fit this description and identify why they might be plausible
3. Rule out 2 of the diagnoses and why they don't fit as well as the third (this can include things such as prevalence rates, age of onset, etc)
4. Present the most likely diagnosis and why you think it is the most likely (compare symptoms, consider demographics and statistics about the disorder) and include one question (or more) that you would want to ask to solidify your diagnosis.
5. What treatment recommendations do you have based on this diagnosis?
