Classify the following chemical structures of ß-Lactam antibiotics: OO H N OH N NH2 ZI "I NE H S HO H S HM SH O N N O O OH 0 OH 0 Compound B Compound A (a) Explain their mechanism of action as antibacterial drugs. (b) For each compound, name the heterocyclic ring that is fused with the B-lactam ring. (c) With the aid of a suitable equation, describe how bacteria may nullify the effect of these drugs through their enzymatic activity. (d) What other way/s can bacteria develop resistance to these drugs? Explain. (e) Which of the above structures (if any) have shown stronger resistance to B-Lactamase. If so, propose an explanation for this. (1) Explain the principle upon which B-Lactamase inhibitors work (g) Briefly explain why ß-lactam drugs are in general more effective against gram+ve bacteria.
