Culture is the set of commonly held societal beliefs that define what behaviors are socially gratifying among a societal group. These societal beliefs are sometimes referred to as core societal values (CSVs) or cultural values. These beliefs frame everyday life and provide a reference point with which to judge behaviors. Acceptable behaviors become norms of the society and when consumers act inconsistently with these norms, they face negative repercussions in the form of cultural sanctions. Culturally consistent behaviors are rewarded and are thus associated with greater value than culturally inconsistent behaviors.
