describing and analyzing an ethical dilemma which you (or someone you know well) actually experienced in an organizational setting (such as a company, school, sports team, church, sorority, etc.). An ethical dilemma is a situation which involves ethical questions (issues of moral right and wrong) and in which the moral course of action is either (a) not clear or (b) clear but unpleasant to take because of possible negative outcomes for the person faced with the decision or for others. Your paper should do the following things. Point values for each section are listed in parentheses at the end. Please number each section of your submission using the numbers below. It's not required but may be helpful to list the direction for each point before your answer. 1. describe the situation in enough detail that the instructor clearly understands what happened (5) I have a friend who is a first year nurse. She is a bed side nurse who calls vent about her shift, while maintaining confidentiality. Sometimes she calls me crying because she is supposed to see her patients as just patients and treat her job like it is just a job. But for her she sees everyone as a human and always keeps the best attitude with all of her patients. There was a time she was explaining to me how sometimes she has patients that are comfort meaning that there is nothing that can be done for them anymore and they are going to die. She expressed that understanding that these individuals going to pass away soon, can be extremely difficult. Where the ethics dilemma comes in is the medication that is to be administered. The medication that they give the patients is a medication that makes them die quicker. However, doctors prescribe it for every one hour and PRN which means as needed. Sometimes family will ask for the medication even though the patients are in pain or uncomfortable. Sometimes it gets hard because you know that it'll kill them quicker, but it still within her scope of practice. It's like they don't want the individual to fight to stay alive anymore. Sometimes these patients are nonverbal so you don't know if the medication is needed or not so you still have to give it to them as prescribed by the doctor. 2. indicate which of the types of Ethical Challenges described in The Business Ethics Field Guide your dilemma most closely seems to fit within, and explain why (5); I think that the ethical challenge described in business ethics field guide that best fits this ethical dilemma is 3. identify what the various ethically desirable outcomes/results of the situation would have been, once all actions have been taken (once the situation has been set in motion, what is the best possible set of outcomes that could have resulted after you and others finished taking all actions that could have been taken?) (6); In this instance there's really not much to do because no matter what you do the end of both decisions is death. The desirable result in this situation would be to reduce how much of the medication is prescribed and give them the chance to fight a little for life. Talking to the family more to decide what should be done. With this choice something may change. This is a point where a miracle is possible. The other choice is giving them the medications as instructed by the doctor and just giving them a quicker way to die and not have to fight. 4. explain why you believe these outcomes/results to be both ethical and desirable (5); She states that she believes that these outcome are both ethical and desirable because no one m English (United Stateo) 942 werde
5. identify what actions you should have taken to bring about these ethical and desirable outcomes, once the initial action creating the dilemma had occurred (i.e., you cannot answer this on the basis of the initial questionable action not having been taken) (6); 6. explain what actions you actually ended up taking (5); Since it is her job she has to follow the direction of the doctor. Giving the medication as prescribe by the doctor for each individual as needed no matter what will happen. 7. explain what the outcomes/results actually were, AND how ethically desirable they were (5); The outcome of was that most of these individuals actually remains in the same state/position for a long time or ends up dying. 8. reflect on why, in retrospect, you think the actions engaged in were taken (both the initial ones and the ones that you and others subsequently took) (6); 9. discuss the extent to which each of the six ethical decision making principles discussed by Collins (egoism, social group relativism, cultural relativism, utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics) was in evidence in the actions taken by yourself or others in this situation (12 pts) 10. reflect on what you have learned from this experience (5).
