2 (40 pts) Methanol is produced from carbon monoxide and hydrogen according to the reaction CO + 2H₂ CH3OH. The process (see figure below) contains a recycling and a purge stream. 100 mole/hr of fresh feed enters the process. The fresh feed contains (by mole) 32% CO, 64% H2, and 4% N2. The fresh feed is mixed with 500 mole/hr of a recycle stream to produce the feed to the catalytic reactor, which contains 13% N₂ (by mole). The reactor outlet enters a condenser and two streams emerge: a liquid stream containing all the methanol formed in the reactor and a gas stream containing unreacted CO and H₂ and N₂. The gas stream is split into two fractions (see figure): the purge stream that is removed from the process and the recycle stream that combines with the fresh feed. (a) (b) (c) Calculate molar flowrates ₁, ₂, and 3 and mole fractions x₁ and x₂. Calculate the overall conversion of carbon monoxide to methanol. Calculate the single-pass conversion of carbon monoxide to methanol. 100 mol/h 32 mol conn 64 mol H₂/h 4 mol N₂/h n, (mol/h) 13 mol N₂/mol 500 mol/h x, (mol N₂ /mol) x (mol có, mọi) 1-x-x, (mol H₂/h) reactor n, (mol/h) x, (mol N₂ /mol) x, (mai có, mọi) 1-x-x₂ (mol H₂/h) Purge cond. n₂ (mol CH₂OH/h)
