Hello! I am stuck on this question. Can someone please helpme solve it. Thank you!!!
Question 1:
circular utility tunnel with a proposed radius of 3.5 m. Thetunnel will be excavated horizontally in the direction 235° at adepth of 100 m below the ground surface in jointed Norite. a seriesof unconfined and confined laboratory compression tests wereundertaken on 54 mm diameter intact drill cores collected in thevicinity of the tunnel location. Results are listed:
Y= 7.2217x + 249.85 (MC)
Y= 4425.1x + 90262 (HB) ----> From graphsthat answers wont let me post
The available diamond drill core logs also indicate that withinthe zone of influence of the tunnel (2.5 times the tunnel diameterfrom each side of the tunnel’s boundary), one of the principlestresses is vertical (p) and related to the depth and density ofthe overlying strata (2.95 g/cc). The other two principle stressesare horizontal and almost 0.5 times p. In addition, typically ten(10) natural fractures and three (3) artificial joints (due to thedrilling process) are reported over a distance of 100 cm in theretrieved drill cores. Making use of the above information, answerthe following questions. [5 Marks]
Using the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown relationships, calculatethe parameters listed below for each failure criterion. Which ofthe two criteria tends to overestimate the tensile strength of therock, and why?
* Hoek-Brown parameters: mi,σc (UCS) and σt (tensile strength) for intact rock
* Mohr-Coulomb parameters: φ (friction angle),c (cohesion), σc (UCS) and σt (tensile strength)
Thank you!!
