1. A braced-slender column has 350 x 450 mm cross-section and fully restrained at top and bottom of its connection. The column has an effective length of 5m and to be designed using grade C30 concrete and high yield reinforcement. a) Determine the design moment of the column, if it carries an ultimate axial load of 800 kN, major bending moment of 25 kNm and minor bending moment of 15 kNm at top and bottom of column respectively. (CLO3, 5 marks) b) Design bending reinforcement and shear reinforcement of the column. Assume nominal cover is based on durability, exposed to corrosion by carbonation under moderate humidity, and designed under 50 years of design life. Suggest reinforcement size that would be economic to the whole column elements in the construction. (CLO3, 20 marks) c) Sketch reinforcement detailing of the above column for cross-sectional and its elevation view. (CLO3, 5 marks).
