Your employer produces large mobile machinery for industry such as backhoe loaders, dumpers, excavators, telescopic handlers. It has always prided itself as being on the leading edge of Non-traditional machining processes for Fabrication i.e., cutting parts from flat plates of steel which can be joined to form hollow sections for chassis, loading arms etc. The senior management are concerned that they no longer are using the best currently available technology and want to look to future developments currently in research worldwide which may give them a competitive edge. You have been asked to produce a report which addresses the state of the art in the cutting of flat plate and what developments are currently being researched. For each cutting process, you have been asked to identify and compare the potential performance in terms of maximum thickness, sheet material hardness, dimensional tolerance, cut width and cutting speed. This should build on your course by additional background research.
