1.17 Figure 1.8 shows a line shaft on which two gears, A and C, and a pulley, B, are mounted. Gear A receives 25 kW from a motor pinion mounted as shown. Gear C de- livers 17 kW to another gear in such a way that the line joining the wheel centres is 30° to the vertical. Both gear wheels (A and C) are 20° full-depth involute form, Ahav- ing a pitch circle diameter of 450 mm and Chaving a pitch circle diameter of 300 mm. The positions of the three ele- ments are as indicated. The resultant of the belt tensions is a force of P = 1 200 N, acting as shown. The shaft speed is 420 r/min. Design the shaft.
