Argentina has faced high inflation during the last years. Thismakes people to demand more
US dollars as a way to make their payments. Given the increasein the demanded quantity of US dollars and the fixed exchange rateregime they had, more dollars were demanded than what they weresupplied in this economy. To close this gap, “In 2011, thegovernment, led by Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, restricted thepurchase of dollars. The government tightened these restrictionsbetween 2011 and 2015 — people could buy fewer dollars, could notuse “saving” as a justification, and had to pay higher taxes whenthey used credit and debit cards abroad.”
